Friends, it’s hard to believe it’s been 2 weeks since my last posting. I know I promised a post every week but, well, sometimes life happens. In this case, my twin came for a 4 day visit, which was awesome. Then I came down with a dozy of a cold. I’m on drugs as we speak… I mean, as I write this, so things are a little fuzzy. If this blog post feels like it’s lacking flow, it’s probably because it is. :) The average person doesn’t think much about typography, if at all. Though it it surrounds us everyday, from the cereal box you open in the morning to the book you put down before you sleep. I really love the following poster.
Good Typography is Invisible, Bad Typography is everywhere. So true! There’s a lot one can learn about typography: anatomy, kerning, leading, fonts, families, pairing, letter-spacing, etc. But, I’m not about to write out a lesson here.
If you want to read a really fun overview about typography, you definitely need to check out the free online book: Meet Your Type – a Field Guide to Love and Typography. Yep, you can learn about love and typography in the same book… just in time for Love day tomorrow. Here are a few of the spreads from the book:

(is it actually possible?)
But things aren’t always so lovey-dovey in the typo-world. Every designer that I’ve ever met hates Comic Sans. There are websites dedicated to it, even a documentary being made about it. If you use Comic Sans you will be kicked out of the club.
Now, to really belong to the club you’ve got to: 1) hold helvetica in high regard, and 2) be able to distinguish the differences between Helvetica and Arial
This is a great test (click image to take it yourself):
To join the club you must also know what Lorem Ipsom is. It is placeholder text (filler text) commonly used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document. It is also sometimes referred to as “greeking”. Here’s a great Lorem Ipson text generator:
If you’re wanting to break free from the standard, though I’m not sure how it’ll be accepted, you can try the Fillerati generator. Instead of Lorem Ipsum, it allows you to select copy from various famous pieces of literature.
I wish I had more to share more with you… but I’ve used up all my resources trying to keep this coherent :) Until, next week… stay healthy my friends! – Inspireling

Hey, great post. You should have totally used that comic I sent you! :P (And I am redoing a fax cover here at work because it has comic sans AND word art on it!)
